Sonny Freeman, Jr.

On October 15, 2022, at Hospice Ministries, William Travis “Sonny” Freeman, Jr. peacefully surrendered his mortal soul to his Heavenly Father. He arrived on this earth on March 12, 1932, in Hazlehurst, MS as the only child of William Sr. and Mother Hazel Freeman. Later, they relocated to Jackson, MS.

In 1950, while living In Jackson, Sonny graduated from Central High and then he attended USM, Hattiesburg, MS majoring in accounting. In1952, after activation from the Naval Reserve, he served his country on active duty in U. S. Navy where he graduated Yeoman School and then served as YNTSN aboard USS LOGAN (APA 196). While in service, Sonny earned Awards/Medals for National Defense, Korean Service and United Nations. In 1954 he was Honorably Discharged in San Francisco, CA. After his U. S. Navy service, he returned home to Jackson, MS where he was then employed by MDOT as an accountant until retirement in 1993. During his MDOT years, he purchased property in a secluded area of Florence, MS where he constructed his eventual retirement home.

In his younger days, Sonny was an avid deer hunter and gardener. Also, he was a big fan of country music and dancing which led him to meet, and eventually wed Shirley Davis Roberts, the love of his life. They really enjoyed traveling in the RV to various destinations, especially the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Then as he aged, he loved just sitting outdoors under his gazebo enjoying nature.

Sonny is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Davis Roberts Freeman of Florence. Also, his son Adam (Christie) Freeman, grandson Gage Freeman, bonus grandson Jayden Dillard and bonus daughter Cheri Roberts, as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Dawn Freeman. Also, by Hart, his faithful German Shepherd, and longtime fur baby, Sassy, his Pomeranian which he dearly loved.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation will be handled by Chancellor Funeral Home, Florence, MS with memorial services to be held on October 26, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. with an hour visitation beginning at 12:00 noon.
