Virginia "Ginger" Mangum Smith

Virginia “Ginger” Mangum Smith, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Villa South Assisted Living in Florence. Visitation is from 5:00-8:00pm Friday, July 14, 2023, at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence and from 10:00-11:00am Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Wesleyanna United Methodist Church in Star with services beginning at 11:00am. Interment will be in Wesleyanna Cemetery. Reverend Heather Hensarling will officiate the services. A native of Louisville, MS, Ms. Ginger was born on September 3, 1935. Her family moved to Star in 1948 after her father accepted a position as a teacher and basketball coach for Star School. She married Jimmie Mangum in 1952 and they went on to have three sons who they raised in Star. In 1969, she and Jimmie purchased Mangum Store in Star which had been in the Mangum family for around 50 years at the time. They operated Mangum Store until it’s closing in October of 1987. She went on to work for the United States Postal Service for 42 years and during her time as Postmaster in Star, she always kept a bowl of candy for young visitors and knew everyone by name. She was a loyal member of Wesleyanna United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and volunteered much of her time.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. James Prentiss, and Mrs. Fannie Mae Fulton, her first husband, Mr. Jimmie Lowe Mangum, her second husband, Mr. Robert L. Smith, and her siblings James Prentiss Fulton, Jr., Imogene Fulton Davis, and William “Bill” Fulton. She is survived by her three sons, Tim Mangum and wife, Angie, of Star, David Mangum and wife, Sandra, of Edwards and Ted Mangum and wife, Janine, of Star; six grandchildren, Amy Mangum, Corey Mangum (Katherine), Britney Mangum Huber (Matthew), Marcus Mangum (Haley), Matthew Mangum (Kristen) and Mason Mangum (Cassie); two stepsons Mike Smith (Cathy) and Gary Smith (Michele); two stepdaughters, Cindy Hampton (Donnie) and Lynn Long (Jason); eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She loved her family and friends so well and will be missed by them dearly.  

The family would like to thank Villa South Assisted Living in Florence and HomeCare Hospice in Jackson for their excellent care and love.
