Virgil D. Allen, Jr., 95, of Jackson, Mississippi, peacefully passed away on April 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy marked by service, dedication, and a love for family. Born on January 25, 1930, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he grew up to embody the values of perseverance and hard work that characterized his life.
Virgil proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, demonstrating courage and commitment to his country. After his military service, he pursued a career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he excelled as a civil engineer. His meticulous nature and attention to detail earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and peers alike.
Education was important to Virgil, and he held a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, which laid the foundation for a successful career. Beyond his professional achievements, he had a deep passion for restoring classic cars, particularly Mustangs and Thunderbirds. He delighted in the hands-on work of maintaining and driving these treasured vehicles.
Virgil took great joy in working in his yard and maintaining the yard work outside. His approach to gardening reflected his thoughtful personality, as he took pride in staying busy with endless projects going on.
Virgil was an active member for many years at Methodist Protestant Church in Vicksburg, MS and later at Lakeshore Church in Byram, MS.
Family was at the heart of Virgil's life. He is survived by two sons, Gary (Connie) and Roger (Cindy); grandchildren: Brett, Conner, Jacob, and Brittany Allen; Lydia Dungan (Ben), and Heather Hawkes (Joel); and four cherished great-grandchildren. as well as his brother, Donald Allen of Clinton. The love he had for his family was evident in every interaction; he was a devoted father and an adoring grandfather who made it a priority to be considerate of others, never wanting to be a burden.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Nelma Gambrell Allen, his brother Gus Allen, and his son Mark Allen. His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him, and he will be remembered for the profound impact he made as a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Virgil D. Allen, Jr. lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication, leaving behind cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of his family forever.
