Obituary

It is with profound reverence and a somber heart that we commemorate the life of Tommie Jeannine Hughes, lovingly known as Jeannine, who gracefully departed this world on June 10, 2026, in Byram, Mississippi. Born on June 9, 1930, in Sebastopol, Mississippi, she was a remarkable woman whose presence enriched the lives of all who had the privilege to know her.

Jeannine's journey was marked by accomplishments both humble and grand. A proud 1948 graduate of Harperville High School in Harperville, Mississippi, she further honed her skills at business college, a testament to her dedication and drive. Her professional life included meaningful contributions to the Standard Life Insurance Company and Hinds General Hospital, where she served with unwavering commitment and grace.

Her talents extended beyond the workplace; Jeannine was a masterful seamstress, renowned for her exquisite sewing skills. She delighted in crafting with needle and thread, creating pieces that were as beautiful as they were heartfelt. Her kitchen was a realm of comfort and warmth, where she delighted in Southern country cooking, preparing meals that brought family and friends to the table with joy and gratitude.

Sports were among her passions, particularly women's basketball and baseball. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she cheered on her beloved Mississippi Braves Baseball team and reveled in the spirited games of her grandchildren. A great sister and devoted family member, Jeannine found joy in nurturing her garden, cultivating the finest purple hull peas, a signature of her green-thumbed diligence.

Her personal life blossomed in a unique and cherished moment when she and her beloved husband, William R. Hughes, Jr., embarked upon their marital journey in a double wedding ceremony with her best friend—a memory that speaks volumes of the close bonds she treasured.

Jeannine’s legacy lives on through her cherished family: her daughters Sally Shaw and Teresa (Tim) Lowe, her son Tommy Hughes, her grandchildren Emily Marciel, David Shaw, Ethan Shaw, Ryan Lowe, and Chad Lowe, as well as her great-grandchildren Hannah, Madison, Brantley, Tristan, and Hattie. She is fondly remembered by her brother Max Loper. Her loving parents, Thomas Arthur Loper and Myrtle Johnson, and her beloved husband, William R. Hughes, Jr., have preceded her in passing.

The community and loved ones will gather to honor and remember her life at Chancellor Funeral Home Byram Location, 7225 S Siwell Rd, Byram, Mississippi 39272. Visitation will be held on June 19, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed seamlessly by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Her final resting place will be at Lakewood Memorial Park South, 430 McCluer Rd, Jackson, Mississippi 39212, with burial commencing at 3:00 PM.

Jeannine's life was a tapestry of kindness, resilience, and devoted love. Her memory will forever inspire those who knew her to embrace life with the same fervent spirit and gentle grace she displayed. In the quiet moments of reflection, may we all find comfort in the enduring legacy of her remarkable soul, a beacon of warmth shining brightly in the hearts of her family and friends.
