Thomas Dirk Phillips, affectionately known as Tom, passed away on May 21, 2026, in Raymond, Mississippi. Born on September 26, 1941, in Chicago, Tom lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a passion for creativity, and a gentle spirit that touched all who knew him.
Tom was a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his doctorate in history, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning and intellectual growth. However, perhaps his most cherished role was that of a full-time father. He took immense pride and joy in caring for his children, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to managing their busy schedules and attending every ball game and sports event, embodying the true spirit of a devoted dad.
His creative talents were remarkable. Tom had a deep love for restoring motorcycles, and he poured his heart into painting, woodworking, and all manner of creative projects. His passion for building and creating extended to their home and yard, where his hands brought ideas to life through meticulous yard work and craftsmanship. His creativity was a defining aspect of his character, leaving behind many lasting legacies in the spaces he transformed.
An avid reader, Tom's love of books was well-known among friends and family, reflecting his inquisitive nature and broad interests. These quiet moments of reflection and learning balanced the energetic demands of his family life and hobbies.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Jayne Christine Van Grondelle, and their five children: Ryan Johnson (Rob) of St. Charles, Illinois; Worthington Phillips of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Owen Phillips (Stephanie Harrison) of Sydney, Australia; Bronwyn Phillips (Anthony O'Neill) of Lafayette, Colorado; and Lu Phillips (Fiona Ferguson) of Brooklyn, New York. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Blake and Halen Johnson of St. Charles, Illinois, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Irna Phillips, his sister, Katherine Phillips, and his son, Guthrie Phillips, whose memories he held dear.
Thomas Dirk Phillips will be remembered with immense respect and affection by all who were blessed to know him. His steadfast dedication to family, his creative spirit, and his gentle nature remain enduring gifts to those left behind.
