Robert James Burrows

Robert James Burrows, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on May 11, 1943, in Mobile, Alabama, Jim lived a life full of dedication, service, and love that left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jim proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Army, where his commitment extended beyond active duty as he became an instructor for the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), helping to shape the minds and futures of many young people. His discipline and leadership were hallmarks not only in the military but throughout his life.

Outside of his service, Jim found great joy in simpler pleasures: he loved fishing and cherished the time he spent working on his farm. These hobbies allowed him to connect deeply with nature and provided a peaceful counterbalance to his structured years in uniform.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 56 years, Darlene Buchholz Burrows of Florence, Mississippi. Together they built a family that stood as a testament to their enduring partnership and love. He is survived by his children: Tillie Burrows-Fitzgerald and her husband William of Florence; Kathi McComic and her husband Troy of North Carolina; Doug Burrows of Florence; and Lois Tibbs and her husband Clint of Oklahoma. Jim also delighted in his grandchildren—Michelle Fitzgerald, Tyler Fitzgerald, Tricia Rutherford, and John Markley—and his great-grandchildren, Matthew and Shelby, who brought immense joy to his later years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, George Burrows and Lois Purvis, and his siblings William, Thomas, Frannie, and Peggy, who remain fondly remembered in the hearts of those who knew them.

A visitation to honor Jim’s life will take place on May 8, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Chancellor Funeral Home Florence, located at 2576 US 49 in Florence, Mississippi. Following this, a funeral service will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the same location. Jim's final resting place will be at Garden of Memories in Florence, beginning at 12:00 PM on May 8, 2026.
