Richard Gerald Stephens

Richard Gerald Stephens, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of the Florence community, passed away peacefully in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 4, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born on November 30, 1941, in Natchez, Mississippi, Richard was the beloved son of Richard W. Stephens and Willie Belle Dromgoole Stephens. Raised in Vidalia, Louisiana, his early years helped shape the values that defined his life: hard work, devotion to family, integrity, kindness, and unwavering faith. For more than four decades, Richard called Florence, Mississippi, home, where he touched countless lives through his warmth, generosity, and genuine care for others.

Richard dedicated 50 years of his career to sales in the automotive and heavy-duty parts industry, working with Ferris Company. Over the years, he became more than a trusted professional; he was also a friend and confidant to customers and colleagues alike. He was widely respected for his honesty, integrity, work ethic, and deep knowledge of his field.

A faithful member of Hickory Ridge Baptist Church, Richard served his church family in many ways throughout the years. He served as a Deacon and was actively involved in the Family Care Ministry, faithfully visiting members in hospitals and nursing homes. He also served on the visitor team, reaching out to those who visited the church, and was a faithful member of his small group. Richard regularly participated in the church’s men’s breakfast and was always willing to lend a hand wherever he was needed. His service reflected the quiet faith, compassion, and care for others that characterized his life.

Richard’s passions extended beyond his work and faith. He loved spending time on the golf course and cheering on his favorite LSU sports teams. At home, he found comfort and joy in the companionship of his beloved cat, Gracie.

Family was at the center of Richard’s life. He shared many years of marriage and cherished memories with his late wife, Margaret Stephens. Together, they built a loving family, and Richard took great pride in being a steady and guiding presence for his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. Though he deeply mourned the loss of his son, Mitchell A. Stephens, Richard continued to offer steadfast love, encouragement, and support to those around him.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Robin Shannon and her husband, Brian; his son, Mike Stephens and his wife, Michelle; his grandchildren, Richard Michael Stephens, Jr., Elijah Slay, Andrew Slay, Ronnie Evan Russum, Aiden Russum, Owen Russum, Matthew Shannon, and Wesley Shannon; and his great-granddaughter, Rhiannon Stephens. Each held a special place in his heart, and he took great joy in their lives, accomplishments, and time spent together.

In addition to his wife, Margaret Stephens, and his son, Mitchell A. Stephens, Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Richard W. Stephens and Willie Belle Dromgoole Stephens.

Richard Gerald Stephens will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unwavering faith, strong character, and remarkable ability to bring people together. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his family, friends, church family, and all whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Hickory Ridge Baptist Church, 319 Hickory Ridge Road, Florence, Mississippi. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM at the church.

Interment will take place at Chancellor Funeral Home Memorial Gardens in Florence.
