Richard Lawrence Laird passed away on October 7, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. He was born on June 21, 1949, in Seagraves, Texas.
Richard earned a master’s degree and went on to live a life marked by service, skill, and devotion to those he loved. He served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, retiring with the rank of Major. He was also a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America group. In his working life, he was a carpenter by trade, a craft that reflected both his discipline and his hands-on nature.
He found great joy in hunting, fishing, and cooking, and he especially loved spending time with his family. His grandkids held a special place in his heart, and the love he gave to his family will remain one of the lasting gifts of his life.
He is survived by his daughters, Wynter Laird, Tasha Laird, and Hether Laird. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Jarad Pevey, Deanna Poor, Sommer Ellis, Blade Jenkins, Makalyn Merchant, Gunter Wishork, and Jairden Wishork, as well as his great-grandaughter, Bexley Ellis. Richard is also survived by his brothers, John Laird, Kurt Laird, Ed Weidman, and Rick Williams, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Laird, and his mother, Norma Laird.
Visitation will be held on October 12, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home Florence, 2576 US 49, Florence, Mississippi 39073. A funeral service will follow on October 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home Florence.
Richard Lawrence Laird will be remembered with love and gratitude for his years of military service, his dedication to his family, and the many lives he touched through his strength, care, and steady presence.
