Terry

Opal Mae Burnett Cothern was born on January 10, 1937 in the community of Enon, Mississippi, where she spent her formative years. She attended Enon High School graduating Valedictorian of her class. She later went to business school in Jackson, Mississippi working as an administrative assistant and retiring from Housing and Urban Development. Throughout her career, she was known for her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. But more than anything, Opal was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family, sharing stories, playing games, and meeting all of their needs. She was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced.

In her free time, Opal enjoyed gardening, and was always eager to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. In her retirement she and Leroy returned to their home community of Enon and built her dream home. Where they started Gran and Pop’s Peaches. They loved and cherished the relationships they built within the community. Additionally, Opal was an active member of Enon Baptist Church, volunteering, teaching and serving wherever there was a need. She made others feel loved, appreciated and accepted.

Opal is survived by her loving husband, Leroy Cothern and her child Chris Cothern, daughter in-law Traci Cothern, son-in-law Clifford Sumrall and her grandchildren, Shan Michael Cothern and Addie Marie Cothern.

Opal is preceded in death by her parents - Leslie Estel Burnett and Addie Lee Burnett, her children - Debbie Sumrall, Michael Leroy Cothern and Betty Carol Cothern, her granddaughter - Jessica Renee Sumrall and her siblings - Hoyt Burnett, Dolan Burnett and Violet Rae Burnett.

Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
