Nellie Virginia Sojourner

April 22, 1932 — August 12, 2025

Terry

Mrs. Nellie "Virginia" Sojourner, age 93, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025, at her home in Terry, Mississippi, the town where she was born on April 22, 1932, and spent her entire life devoted to faith, family, and community.

Affectionately known as “Snook” by those closest to her, Virginia was a steadfast presence in the lives of many. Though she and her beloved husband Quinton Sojourner did not have children of their own, she played a nurturing role in the lives of numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved and cared for as if they were her own. Her deep well of compassion and unwavering love left an indelible mark on generations of her extended family.

Virginia dedicated 25 years of service to McKesson Robbins Wholesalers, where she was known for her diligence and commitment. Her strong work ethic extended beyond the office—she also worked alongside Quinton at their Texaco station in Terry until their retirement. Together, they built a life rooted in mutual respect and shared purpose.

A woman of deep faith, Virginia was a lifelong member of the Terry Sanctified Church. She served faithfully as a Children’s Sunday School teacher for many years and found great joy in worshiping through song with her husband. Their voices often blended in harmony as they sang their favorite hymns together—a cherished expression of their devotion to God.

Virginia’s home was always filled with warmth and welcome. She had a passion for flower and vegetable gardening, cultivating beauty and nourishment with equal care. Her kitchen was another place where love bloomed—she delighted in cooking for her family and sharing meals that brought everyone together. An avid reader throughout her life, she found comfort and inspiration in the written word.

She is survived by her brother Calvin "Butch" Patterson (Rachel), along with a host of nieces and nephews who will forever cherish the guidance, love, and strength she so generously gave.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Quinton Sojourner; parents Ernest Patterson and Virginia Campbell Patterson; brothers Volley Patterson, Ernest "Peewee" Patterson, Kenneth Patterson, Buford "Jim" Patterson, and Larry Patterson; sisters Jean Smith, Shirley Stockett, Freeda Smith, and Faye Cook.

There will be a Graveside service held to honor Mrs. Sojourner Saturday at 2:00 pm at Terry City Cemetery.

The pallbearers are Tim Patterson, Russell Young, Jake Cook, Keith Smith, David Curtis, and Brad Patterson.

Her legacy is one of quiet strength, enduring faith, and boundless love. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.

The family would like to thank the staff of Copiah County Medical Center and Arden Hospice for their compassion and care of Mrs. Nellie and her family.
