Obituary

Mary Sunshine Johnson McLemore, 93, of Raymond, passed away July 18, 2026 at home.

She was born July 1, 1933, in Sebastopol, Mississippi to the late William Skinner Johnson and Mattie C. Mills Johnson. After coming to Jackson in 1954, she began work at Trustmark Bank, eventually leaving for the bookkeeping department at Hesselbein Tire where she spent the next 30 years working along side her dear friends, Edna and Miriam.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and devoted member for over 60 years of Raymond Road Baptist Church.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, sisters, Billie Buntyn and Genell Leming, brother, Edward Ray Johnson and son-in-law, Arty Girod.

Those left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of over 70 years, Charles “Sonny” McLemore, Sr., who for the last 3 years of her illness, has hardly left her side; both living up to the names “Sonny” and “Sunshine”, what a team! In addition to her husband, she leaves behind two wonderful children, her son, Charles McLemore,Jr. (Wanda); daughter, Vicki Girod, (Arty); and three grandchildren; Hallie Jones (Doug), Hayes Girod (Lauren) and Bennett McLemore. She is also survived by four “rough and tuff” great grandson’s; Bryce Jones, Charlie Jones, Mac Girod, and Arty Girod and one super precious, great granddaughter, Mattie Lou Girod.

Last but not least we want to express our deepest appreciation for mom’s faithful caregivers Felicia, Ivy, Heart of Hospice team, and to my sister in law, Cindy for the endless meals she prepared, Icee’s brought and most of all the nearly daily visits just to hug, hold, fix hair, visit and talk with mom and dad - we can’t say thanks enough for all of your Godly service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Raymond Road Baptist Church, 4622 Raymond Road, Jackson, MS 39212.

*How life was; Colossians 3:18-19 -Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”

They had 70 years, these lovebirds, “Sonny and Shine”, as they were appropriately named, let rays of a happy marriage permeate their lives and the lives of countless others.

*to how it is and how it will be;

Psalms 23 - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. He leads me and paths of righteousness for His name sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and (change word) your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Thank you Heavenly Father, for sending your sinless son, Jesus and for his sacrificial blood purchased redemption of this sweet lady, as well as the invitation to anyone who trusts and believes!
