Mary Jane Cummings, peacefully passed away on June 9, 2026, at Riggs Manor in Raymond, Mississippi, on her 97th birthday. Born on June 9, 1929, in Helena, Arkansas, Mary Jane lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and community.
Mary Jane was known for her warm, loving, and caring nature, characteristics that endeared her to all who knew her. Her strong ties to family were reflected vividly in the joy she found traveling in their motorhome with her late husband, Sanford "Sam" Martin Cummings, Sr., and in the cherished weekends and holidays spent with her daughter, Carol.
She held an associate’s degree and dedicated much of her working life as a secretary for various businesses over the years.
A faithful and devoted member of Griffith Baptist Church, Mary Jane took great pride in her spiritual commitment. She also enjoyed playing on her iPad, and she never went without. During her later years at Riggs Manor, Mary Jane found companionship and happiness among friends and staff who held her in the highest esteem.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her loving parents, Walter and Lillian Joiner; her husband Sam; her brother, Walter Joiner; and her sons-in-law Vernon "Sonny" Ray, Rick Cothern, and Lynn Sanders.
She is survived and deeply missed by her devoted children: Jan Ray of Terry, Mississippi; Carol (Jim) Turnage of Brandon, Mississippi; Sanford "Marty" (Cheryl) Cummings, Jr., of Virginia; and Madeline Sanders of Lumberton, Texas. Mary Jane’s legacy lives on through her eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, who were a source of immense pride and joy to her.
Mary Jane Cummings leaves behind a community touched by her kindness and a family forever grateful for her love and steadfast support. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
There will be a Visitation for friends and family on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 11:30 until 1:30., with a Funeral Service following the visitation. And will have a Graveside at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Blvd.
