Obituary

Martha Lou A. Cothran, 82, was called home by her Lord and Savior on May 1, 2026, she passed away peacefully after an ongoing illness.

For over four decades, Martha called Vicksburg home. She was a devoted Christian whose faith guided her throughout her life. She faithfully served her church, Immanuel Baptist Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and was a dedicated member of her Sunday school class. Her life reflected her strong faith, kindness, and servant’s heart.

She found joy in gardening, baking, and sending thoughtful cards to family and friends. Martha was known for always being there for others, especially when they were sick or in need, offering comfort, care, and encouragement. She had a special gift for making others feel loved and cared for.

Professionally, Martha Lou served as an administrative assistant at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station, now known as the Engineering Data and Resource Center (EDRC). Her work there was characterized by diligence and professionalism, contributing to important projects through her steadfast support.

Her family and friends were her greatest blessing, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Martha dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and the love she poured into their lives will remain a lasting part of her legacy. She had a special bond with Braylen and Mason and they became her lifeline in her later years.  She took immense joy in their lives and achievements. Her love for her family was a defining feature of her personality, creating bonds that were cherished by all who knew her.

In her final moments, Martha was surrounded by her devoted family: her daughter, Michelle; son-in-law, Harold; granddaughter, Brittany; great-grandchildren, Braylen and Mason; her beloved dog, Bella; and her hospice nurse, Sarah.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Michelle Smith, and her husband Harold; her son, Russ Almond, and his wife Dawn; grandchildren Brittany Smith, Jessica Berry and her husband Kevin, Drew Almond, and Ashley Almond; as well as great-grandchildren Braylen Osborne, Mason Osborne, Carson Berry, and Camden Berry. These family members carry forward her legacy of love and kindness.

Martha Lou was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, Paul Cothran; her parents, Elmer and Maggie Adcock; and her brother, William Adcock. Their memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Martha leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, compassion, and service that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Her life was one of quiet strength, loving devotion, and faithful service—a life deeply woven into the fabric of her family and community.
