Obituary

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Major Jean Dilmore, lovingly known as “Major Jean,” who left this world on March 14, 2026, in Sumrall, Mississippi. Born on January 21, 1941, in Star, Mississippi, she graced this life with her radiant presence for 85 years.

Major Jean was a woman who truly embraced life with an enduring passion and an ever-present smile. She found profound joy in tending her garden and nurturing her beloved flower beds, where her love for nature bloomed as beautifully as the petals she so carefully cultivated. Her heart was deeply anchored in her faith. She was a lifelong member of Star Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and her spirit shone brightly.

Above all, Major Jean was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, treasures that brought immeasurable happiness and meaning to her days. Her loving nature and gentle guidance formed a legacy that will live on through her children and generations to come.

She leaves behind her cherished children, Stacey E. (Belinda) Dilmore and Trenna M. (Stevie) Hall; her beloved grandchildren, Clayton Dilmore, Haleigh Dilmore Mann, Dakota Dilmore, Keeleigh Hall Cowart, Braylen Hall, and Aaron Beard; and her precious great-grandchildren, Eli Weathersby, Breanna Mann, Brady Mann, Evie Mann, Addison Dilmore, Rowan Beard, Collins Beard, Brooks Beard, and Miller Beard. Major Jean’s family circle is further blessed by the presence of her sisters, Claudine Cooper, Clotile Myers, Jane Williams, and Janice Henderson, along with a multitude of nieces and nephews who carry her memory with love.

She was preceded in death by her dear parents, John Ervin “Henry” Byrd and Ella Rogers Byrd; her beloved husband, Albert “Yogi” Eugene Dilmore; her brothers, Lavone Byrd, Dolly Byrd, Joe Byrd, Huey Byrd, and Shelby Byrd; and her sisters, Ida Mae Shepard and Evelyn White.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the beautiful life of Major Jean at Harrisville Community Church, located at 1548 Simpson Hwy 469, Harrisville, Mississippi 39082. Visitation will be held on March 16, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, and again on March 17, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The funeral service will begin immediately following at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Star Cemetery, 3319 Star Rd, Florence, Mississippi 39073, beginning at 1:15 PM.

Major Jean’s spirit will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who knew her a beacon of warmth, faith, and unfailing love. Her life was a testament to living fully and loving deeply, leaving an imprint that will nurture the souls of her family and friends like the flowers she so dearly tended.

May her memory be a blessing, and may we all find comfort in the joyful legacy she leaves behind.
