Kate C. Harper, known to many simply as Kate, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on February 3, 1948, in Union Church, MS, she lived a life rich in love, devotion, and grace that touched all who knew her.
Kate was a cherished legal secretary specializing in land and oil, where she applied her keen intellect and unwavering dedication every day. She held a bachelor's degree, a testament to her commitment to education and personal growth. Yet, it was her deep love for her family and her gift for music that defined her most profoundly. As a devoted pianist, Kate played for local churches in Byram, Jackson, and Vacation Bible School in Florence, sharing her faith and passion through every note she played. This talent remained one of her proudest accomplishments and a source of joy to those around her.
Her gentle spirit and warm heart were evident in her personality—she loved her family fiercely, especially her children, grandchildren, and devoted husband. Kate enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as going to the races with her husband, immersing herself in a good book, and savoring the challenge of crossword puzzles. These hobbies highlighted her vivacious spirit and helped keep her close to those she loved.
Kate’s family was her world, and she leaves behind a loving circle that continues to carry her legacy. She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Joe Harper; her beloved daughter, Jennifer Michele Lofton, and son-in-law David of Texas; her son, Joshua Morris Harper, and his wife Rachel of Waverly, Georgia. Her joy also extended to six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, each a living testament to the love and warmth she radiated.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, John and Luthera Chapman, and her brother, John E. Chapman. Their memories live on in her heart and those who loved her.
A visitation will be held at Chancellor Funeral Home Florence, located at 2576 US 49 in Florence, Mississippi, on April 22, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and on April 23, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The funeral service will follow on April 23 at 10:00 AM at the same location.
Kate’s life was a beautiful symphony of love, music, and unwavering devotion. Her memory will forever resonate in the hearts of her family, friends, and community. She may have played her final melody here on earth, but her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to know her.
