Jerry Wayne Torrence, 74, died at his home in Florence, Mississippi on May 19, 2026 due to complications of Alzheimer’s, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 20, 1951, in Brandon, MS to Mary Sue and JW Torrence, who resided in Branch, Scott County.
Jerry attended Pearl Schools and entered the Air Force following graduation in 1969. His service began in September and Basic Training took him to Wichita Falls, TX. The Air Force deployed him to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. There he married his High School girlfriend, and former wife, Brenda Graham of Pearl and welcomed his first child and only daughter, Sonya. While there he worked as part of the Strategic Air Command and was later transferred to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA where his first son, Jeremy, was born. In September of 1973, Jerry’s military service ended and he and his young family moved back to Pearl. He soon began working as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service.
In 1979, he purchased his family home in Florence. Shortly after that he met the love of his life and soulmate, Hollie Crisler of Jackson. Their unique first date took them to Black Creek for an overnight canoeing adventure with long-time friend Ron Blount. They married in October of 1981. His second son Crisler was born in 1984 and his third son Nicols the following year.
Later in his career, he worked as the Supervisor of Field Maintenance Operations with the United States Postal Service, directing crews throughout the state of Mississippi and parts of Louisiana. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he spent numerous weeks traveling the state contributing to the clean-up efforts. These events and efforts touched him deeply, as he would mourn the state of destruction of such a beautiful and familiar region. His long career with the Postal Service was marked with commendations and distinction. He retired in December of 2010.
In the early 1980’s, Jerry began his long-time passion of coaching. He first coached soccer for his son Jeremy and later for both Crisler and Nicols for the Southwest Rankin Soccer League. He spent many seasons coaching with his close friend Kevin McClure. Jerry also became their first baseball coach. He played indoor soccer for a few seasons in Jackson as a dogged defender. He also spent many years as a soccer referee.
Gardening and landscaping brought continuous joy to his life, as he developed the grounds around his home. Amongst the largest of his undertakings was the total renovation of his home, doubling its size, with the aid of his brothers and father.
Canoeing was a common family past time, from the flat waters of the Piney Woods of south Mississippi to the flowing streams of the southern Appalachians as well as the Ozarks. Summer vacations were regularly spent on and around the Nantahala and Chattooga Rivers.
Jerry was a member of First Methodist Church of Richland where his faith was an important part of his life. He spent many years after his retirement actively volunteering for the church food pantry. He helped to establish the community garden there and spent many years in faithful service to his church. Known for his warmth, generosity and boisterous laugh, he was loved by the congregation.
Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved parents, and daughter, Sonya Torrence Bardwell, whose memories he carried with him always.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Hollie Crisler Torrence; his sons Jeremy Torrence of San Antonio, TX, Crisler Torrence (Joy) of Chattanooga, TN and Nicols Torrence (Franziska) of Salzburg, Austria. Jerry also leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Vance Bardwell (Hope), Courtney Bardwell (Jared), Jennifer Torrence, Kelsey Taylor (Josh), Grace Torrence, Jarret Bardwell, Amber Torrence, Mary-Lou Torrence and Wynn Torrence; and many precious great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. Also surviving him are his brothers, Danny Torrence (Jennie) and Tim Torrence (Karen) of Morton; his sister, Darlene Slater (Steve) of Pearl.
Jerry Wayne Torrence’s legacy is one of steadfast devotion—to his family, his country, and his community. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, as a man of honor, kindness, and enduring love.
To honor Jerry’s lifelong passions the family welcomes donations to First Methodist Church of Richland, American Rivers, and Mississippi Public Broadcasting in lieu of flowers. If you give, please note “In Memory of Jerry Torrence”.
