Mr. James Russell Pettigrew, Sr., age 77 – died Thursday, March 2, 2023, at his residence in Braxton, MS. He was born September 9, 1945, in Ruleville, MS, the son of Sebron Russell and Emma Virginia Bowman Pettigrew. He has been a longtime resident of the Braxton area and a member of New Covenant Church, Harrisville, MS for 33 years.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 9, 2023, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at New Covenant Church with the celebration of his life beginning at 4:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the New Covenant Church Cemetery.
Mr. Pettigrew was an avid watcher of television evangelists. He also enjoyed woodworking, completing puzzles on the computer, and making jelly, with which he excelled. He was extremely hard-headed and seemed to always be successful in any argument in which he was engaged. He was very quick to share his faith with health care staff when he was in the hospital. He retired from UPS after approximately 32 years of service which he began by loading trucks and working his way over time to become the supervisor of the engineering department as well as being instrument in the introduction of new computer systems.
Survivors include his children: James Russell “Rusty” Pettigrew, Jr. (Johnny) of Pensacola, FL, Jason Neil Pettigrew (Alicia) of Abilene, TX, and Sherrie Garlitz (John) of Leander, TX; grandchildren: Taylor Pettigrew (Kayla) of Braxton, MS, Aaron Pettigrew (Kayla) of Braxton, MS, Michelle Hedgepeth (JR) of Harrisville, MS, Samuel Garlitz (Marissa) of Temple, TX, Ashley Pettigrew of Austin, TX, Nathan Garlitz (Jaycee) of Austin, TX, Jeremy Garlitz of Florence, TX, Jason Neil Gibbs (Desiree) of Florence, MS, Alexis Pettigrew of New Orleans, LA, Kevin Tyler Pettigrew-Johnson Mobile, AL, Timothy Josiah Pettigrew of Abilene, TX, Adam Moore (Madison) of Hattiesburg, MS, and Braden Olney (Hailey) of Magee, MS; and fourteen great-grandchildren; 1 sister; Sue Saxton of Florence and 1 brother; Ricky Pettigrew of Yazoo City.
Preceding him in death were his parents (mentioned previously), wife, Gloria Pettigrew, and daughter Ragan Pettigrew.
