James Howard Gurley, Sr.

James Howard Gurley, Sr. passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, in Collins, Mississippi, at the age of 89. He was born on January 23, 1936, in Jackson, Mississippi. James was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he found a strong sense of community and faith.

James enjoying playing the guitar and singing, which brought joy not only to himself but also to those around him. In his leisure time, he found immense pleasure in sitting on his porch with a cup of coffee, reflecting on life and enjoying the simple pleasures. Fishing was another favorite pastime, providing him with both excitement and peace.

His commitment to service began with the National Guard, before he transferred to the United States Navy, where he dedicated a part of his life to his country. He was a dedicated employ of Armstrong World industries for 30+ years.

James is survived by his beloved daughters, Cathy Lindsey and her husband Randy of Florence, and Charlotte Jones of Harrisville; his cherished grandchildren, Anna Russum and her husband Jason, Aaron Lindsey and his wife Katelyn, Daniel Warren, Christopher Jones, Madisson Gurley, Mallory Gurley, and Jakob Gurley; as well as great-grandchildren Korbyn, Malyn, Dax, and Cash. He is also remembered by his brother, Julian Pierce of Raleigh, and his sister, Julia Ainsworth and her husband Malcum of Terry. A host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends will carry his memory forward.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Pearl Gurley, who passed in 1940 and 1971 respectively, his beloved wife Lenora Gurley in 2017, his son Jimmy Gurley in 2017, John Gurley in 2019, and his brother Paul Pierce.

Visitation for James Howard Gurley, Sr. will take place on May 24, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church in Florence, Mississippi, followed by a Funeral Service at 4:00 PM, and an Interment at 4:30 PM. His contributions to his family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
