With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Grace Ruth Dear Shivers, who passed peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 97. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Grace was the heart of our family and a shining example of faith, kindness, and devotion.
Born on April 10, 1928, Grace was one of nine daughters to Mamie and Holland Dear of Harrisville, MS. She cherished these sisterly bonds throughout her life. Her gentle spirit and warm smile left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Called “Oma” to her precious grandchildren, she was a friend to many, helping in any way she could and was also fondly called “Amazing Grace”.
After her children had grown, Grace retired from the State Tax Commission. She was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church in Harrisville. She loved singing in the church choir, lifting her voice in praise to the Savior she adored. Her unwavering love for Jesus was the foundation of her life and a legacy she passed on to generations.
Grace found great joy in her kitchen. She loved to cook and to gather her family around the table, where meals became moments of laughter, prayer, and connection. Her dishes were seasoned with love, and her table was always open -- a place where everyone felt welcome, known, and nourished in body and soul.
Her greatest joy was her family. She poured her love into each child, grandchild, great-grandchild, and great-great-grandchild. She was the keeper of family stories, a prayer warrior, a source of wisdom, and the warm embrace that brought everyone home.
Grace lived a full life, rich in faith, music, laughter, and love. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice knowing she is singing with the angels and reunited with loved ones in Heaven.
Grace is survived by two sisters, Anita Renfrow Smiley and Barbara Mullins; her four children, Chan Patterson, Darlene Smith Tolbert (Richard), Jennie Massey (Curtis), Neil Shivers (partner Greg); 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Grace’s family asks that friends consider memorial gifts to: Antioch Baptist Church 1198 Old Pearl Rd. Florence, MS 39073.
The family will receive friends and extended family for visitation from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by interment at Antioch Baptist Church.
