Evelyn Hunter Martin, affectionately known as “Maw,” went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 19, 2025. She passed away peacefully at the age of 84, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Born on January 30, 1941, Evelyn was the cherished daughter of Joe and Drucilla Hunter.
Evelyn was a woman of deep love, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, John Martin, and her loving children: Alan Martin, Rhonda Hilton, Jimmy Martin, and Laura House. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Jan Walters, whose memory Evelyn carried in her heart each day. “Maw” also leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her endless pride and joy.
A proud attendee of Mississippi State University and Mississippi University for Women (The W), Evelyn was a loyal Bulldog fan and deeply valued education and community. She spent over three decades serving the public through her work in the Personnel Department at the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, where she found purpose in helping others build better lives.
Evelyn lived life with grace and warmth. She had a deep love for gardening, the thrill of discovering treasures at flea markets, and the quiet joy of a good book. Her day was never complete without a hot cup of coffee in hand.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 22nd, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home, 2576 US 49, Florence, MS. A private graveside service for family will follow at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Evelyn’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association Mississippi Chapter in Ridgeland, MS.
Though Evelyn is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
