Obituary

Archie Griffith Stewart, 93, died peacefully at UMMC, on March 5, 2026, with his family by his side. He was heralded into Heaven to the tune the family often sang when he entered the room, Hail to the Chief.

He was born in Clem, Mississippi to Robert Clarence Stewart and Tina Leone Smith Stewart. He graduated from Clem High School. He moved to Jackson and met his future wife, Patricia Connell, on a blind date. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Archie and Pat were married in August, 1953. Three days later he shipped out to Japan where he was stationed at Eta Jima, Japan, with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Jackson where he was employed at Pritchard International Harvester. He later joined Truck Trailer and Equipment Company as a co-owner and Parts Department Manager. He retired in 1999. Archie treasured his friendships with all his of his colleagues from Truck Trailer.

Archie stayed active after retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors and could be found tending his property on his tractor he named Sugar and tinkering on his cars in the carriage house. He was an avid antique car collector. Buying, fixing up and selling antique sports cars was a favorite hobby. He was especially proud to gift his last two cars to his grandsons.

Archie enjoyed meeting and making new friends. He loved Jesus and his church. He loved the Ole Miss Rebels. He loved anything with a motor or an engine. It could be a car, a tractor, or a vacuum.

His church was especially important to him. He was a Deacon and Elder at Alta Woods Presbyterian Church in Jackson. In 1976, he and Pat moved to the Wynndale community. They joined the Wynndale Presbyterian Church where he served with joy. Under his leadership the church added the fellowship hall.

Welcoming Archie into heaven were his parents Bob and Leone Stewart, his beautiful sisters, Polly Boleware, Bobbye DuBard and his beloved big brother, Roger Stewart.

His greatest joy was his family. Surviving him is his wife of 72 years, Patricia Connell Stewart whom he adored and his daughters Cheryl Stewart Miller (Dennis) and Lisa Stewart Shive (Allen). His four grandchildren called him Poppa; Montgomery Stewart Miller (Preston), Madeleine Byrne Miller (Zachary Branson), Stewart Shive Hammons (Stewart) and Scott Griffith Shive. He was very proud of his great grandsons, his namesake, Archie Williams Miller and 2 month old Bastian Henry Miller. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Pall bearers will be his grandsons, sons in-law and grandsons-in law. The service will be officiated by Dr. Mark Spellman.

On Monday, March 9, visitation will be held at 10:00 am at Wynndale Presbyterian Church, 6600 Terry Road in Byram. Services will follow at 11:00 with interment in the Stewart Family section of the Raymond Cemetery in Raymond, Mississippi.
