Mr. Robert Mitford Megginson

August 2, 1932 — December 19, 2020

Robert Mitford Megginson was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, December 19, 2020. He was 88 years old. Our devastating loss is heaven’s gain. He was born on August 02, 1932 to Oscar Gray Megginson and Gladys Lindsey Megginson in Jackson, MS. He graduated from Central High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Mississippi State University. He remained an avid MSU fan for the rest of his life. At the young age of 20, he married the love of his life, JoAnne Jenkins and they were blessed with a wonderful son and daughter. They celebrated 67 years of blissful married years. As a proud U.S. Army veteran, he considered it a privilege to have served his country during the Korean conflict. He also served as a member of the Army National Guard for many years. After completing college, Bob was employed with Reid-McGee & Company, Wortman & Mann Mortgage Company. After years of mortgage banking experience, he became a partner with Milton, Megginson, & Spencer Home Builders and Mortgage Company. The last 20 plus years prior to retirement were spent with the Mississippi State Tax Commission where he proudly served as Property Tax Director. Civic duty was a top priority for him. He served in many organizations, beginning with the Junior Chamber of Commerce soon after college graduation. Later, he joined the Kiwanis Club, Civitan Club, Jaycees and served on the Southwest Y.M.C.A. board and Youth for Christ board to name a few. He served in various offices and capacities in each organization. He was also involved with IAA (International Association of Assessing Officers) and the Mortgage Banker’s Association. Bob loved the Lord with all his heart and was a Christian example and witness to all who knew him. He was a faithful member of Parkway Baptist Church for many years and a forty-year member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon, adult Sunday school teacher, and in many other capacities. He dearly loved his church family. He made three life-changing mission trips—one to British Honduras and two to Venezuela. These trips made a huge impact on his life. He was happiest when serving others. Bob was an active, dedicated member of Gideon’s International. He spoke on behalf of the Gideon’s in numerous churches and worked tirelessly delivering and placing Gideon bibles. That gave him great joy. He loved all sports, especially the game of golf. He spent twenty plus years as a volunteer soccer, baseball, and basketball coach at the Southwest Y.M.C.A. He had a special bond with all the children he coached and to this day, he is still affectionately called “Coach Bob”. He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnne, of 67 years; daughter, Laurie Anne Gaines of Gulfport; son, Robert Kyle Megginson (Heather) of Byram; and grandchildren, Sammy Gaines, Jr. and Jayden Jacob Gaines of Gulfport and Robert Ashton Megginson of Byram. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oscar gray Megginson, David McNeil Megginson, & Charles Megginson; sisters, Martha Irene Sparks and Margaret Megginson Gray Fowler. Due to Covid, a private graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m., December 22, 2020 at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of your choice.
