Mr. James Galloway Petermann

James Galloway Petermann of Byram passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018. He was born in Inverness, MS on January 14, 1934 to John W. Petermann Sr and Ava Johnson Petermann. Jim graduated from Yazoo City High School in 1953. After high school, he attended Georgia Tech. He was a veteran of the US Army with a specialty in aviation maintenance. He was also an American Legion member. He later worked for General Electric where he was employed as an appliance technician eventually starting his own business, Capital Appliance Service. Jim was a man of many interests. For 32 years, he served the city of Jackson as a reserve police officer having graduated from the first Reserve class in 1974. He achieved the rank of sergeant. Jim was a runner accumulating a large collection of T-shirts from the many races he participated in including the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta Georgia. A sailor at heart, he spent many hours sailing the reservoir, local lakes and at the gulf coast. As well, he covered many miles across the country on his Honda Goldwing. He was also known for his rather large collection of car tags which he proudly displayed, traded, gifted and sold. His family will most remember him as a man who loved children and they loved him. He would lovingly tease them calling them “squirrel”. Jim is preceded in death by his his brother, John W. Petermann , Jr, William Petermann, and his sister, Jackie Comola. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Estelle McGinty Petermann and his children James O. Petermann (Sally), Rita Simmons (Allan), Suzanne Tanner (Daren) , Chris Petermann (Tina) and his siblings, Thomas Petermann (Marilyn) and Jane Branch (Herb), 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 at Lakeshore Church in Byram on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
