She attended the Conehatta School and went to East Central Community College in Decatur, then on to the University of Southern Mississippi where she graduated as a teacher. She taught 35 years in the Rankin County School District in Pelahatchie and Richland. Although she taught most every subject throughout the years, her favorite subject was science, and of science, her greatest fascination was the solar system and astronomy. Stargazing was a pastime she greatly enjoyed. Church and the growth of her relationship with Jesus Christ was always important to her. Her church home for all her years in Richland was Richland United Methodist Church. She served in various lay member roles there and enjoyed participating in the choir. Extending from this was her involvement with the auxiliary of the Gideons International. Mrs. Vance always treasured the knowledge of others coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Vance was incredibly talented in crafts such as sewing and enjoyed outfitting all her boys, son and grandsons alike, in costumes for any and all occasions. Books were rich in her life and sharing books with children was important to her. One of the greatest joys she received was reading. Mrs. Vance loved to read to children, especially her son and grandsons. She had a special tag line she could only do in her voice, “And that’s the ennnnnnd”. Along with her parents, Mrs. Vance was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin “Coyte” Vance; her brother Mr. “Pete” Russell; and her sister, Louise Russell Reynolds. She is survived by her son, John “Kevin” Vance of Florence; daughter-in-law, Misty Lynn Wigley Vance of Florence; grandsons, Kobee Wake Vance and John Russell Harrison Vance of Florence; her niece, Sandra Russell Rainer of Brandon; and her nephews, Billy Reynolds of Noxapater and Roger Reynolds of Philadelphia.
