January 25, 1942 - November 1, 2020
Doris Joyner (78) of Raymond, MS passed away on November 1, 2020 at home surrounded by her devoted husband and family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, having been diagnosed in 2004. She was a long-time resident of Raymond, MS for 43 years. Until her condition made it impossible, she was an active member of Wildwood Baptist Church of Clinton, MS and the Auxiliary of Gideons. Doris was born to Charlie and Margaret in Starkville, MS. She was raised on a cattle farm in Maben, MS. After graduating from Maben High School in 1960, she attended Mississippi State University where she graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She began her career teaching 6th grade at Hollandale School in 1964. During this time, she met the love of her life, Thomas Jerry Joyner. They wed in 1965 in Maben, MS. Doris has truly lived to her high school Senior quote of, “Respect is what you owe, love is what you give.” She selflessly gave her love to her own children and the children she taught as an elementary and Sunday school teacher. She volunteered countless hours to her children’s school, booster clubs, and her church. Doris was talented at needle work and would spend any free time smocking and embroidering beautiful clothing for her 3 children. Most people remember Doris’s kind, pleasant and proper demeanor, but some of her children’s fondest memories are of her competitive Rook card game playing with her family during holidays. She was avid sports fan, especially when the sport involved her children, grandchildren or the Mississippi State Bulldogs. As a loyal MSU alum, she could be heard cheering and shouting at the television during State games. Doris was preceded in death by her parents Charlie & Margaret. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 55 years, Jerry, and her children; Tommy (Shaun), Jenny (Fred) Tolar, and Ashley (Lee) Crump; grandchildren Serena, Noah, Graham, Ethan, Freddy, Sam, Jax, and Charlie; her sister Carolyn (BB) Billingsley and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to the many acts of kindness by relatives and friends, the family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Kindred Hospice for providing compassionate care at home over the years, especially Renada (aid), Laura (nurse), and Danny (Chaplin). A private funeral service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palmer Home for Children, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Gideons.
