Mrs. Dorthy Allen

February 9, 1931 — July 19, 2017

Dorthy Ann Bynum Allen, 86, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. She was known by some as “Miss Dignity” because of her southern elegance and grace. Those who truly knew her, understood that under that genteel persona she possessed a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She was a tiny woman with a quick wit, a sarcastic streak, and she possessed the courage of 1000 men. She grew up in Mt. Olive, Mississippi, the youngest daughter of Robert and Nellie May Bynum. She was a bookworm who graduated from Mt. Olive High School as the valedictorian of her class. When she was 16 she met the love of her life, William H. Allen and they married just af-ter high school. Life was tough for the young couple, but they worked hard and with her help, they made a tremendous success of their life. She stood by his side through everything; ad-vised him on business deals and helped him through all of life’s challenges. She bore him two children, Bob (wife Theresa Carroll of Walker, Louisiana) and Susan (husband Mike Liles of Pela-hatchie, Mississippi) and helped raise her three grandchildren, Billy Allen, Lauren Allen Caraway (husband Ricky Caraway) and Lindsey Dobbs. She was fun; filled with laughter, a song or two (even though she couldn’t carry a tune) and was an extremely joyful soul. She didn’t want to be left out of anything. She was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, and even took many turns around a horse show ring on her beautiful mare, Magic Spell. She was one of those special folks with a healing touch, and was always available to help those who were sick or recovering from surgery. She used these gifts as a hospice volunteer and sat by many patient bedsides during their final days. She fiercely loved her family, and one of her biggest losses came with the sudden death of her beloved sister Kathleen over 10 years ago. If she was your friend, she meant it and stood by you when no one else would. Her friendship was one you could count on forever. Her husband knows better than anyone because she stood by him for over 70 years. We will miss you terribly but we know you are finally at peace. Save a place for us. A celebration of her life will be held Lakeshore Congregational Methodist Church on Siwell Road in Byram, Mississippi on Sunday, July 23, 2017 with family visitation at 1:00pm and a service at 2:00pm.
